CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

CALLIE

The bed is empty when I wake, and panic slowly trickles in. Not about being alone but that whatever is happening between Zeus and me is over now.

I didn’t question last night as it was happening, but now I can’t help thinking if it was a last-time thing. Because today, he’s going to go and take out Pierre, free me, and then I’ll start my new life. Whatever life that might be.

He’s out there with his teammates, planning what’s going to happen today, and we’re now just … done.

Okay. I can be cool with that. I knew it was coming. I do wish he could’ve plowed me at least one time, but maybe it’s better this way. There’s already the love-starved part of my brain sending signals to all my other body parts that this man could be the one.

They all could be the one.

I huff a humorless laugh because Zeus and I could not be more opposite. He sees no one as the possible one. For me, it’s anyone who shows the slightest sliver of decency. In which case, in my defense, I should be head over heels in love with Zeus by now because he’s been nicer to me than any other person.

He respects me, but that still doesn’t mean he sees me as more than a fling. Or that he ever will.

Why am I so desperate for someone to love me? Even worse, why do I always want the ones who will never love me the way I want them to?

It’s a good thing this is done because I can get my head out of the clouds and face reality. Today’s the first day of the rest of my life … or whatever that saying is.

I get out of bed and put on the same sweats Zeus bought me in Vegas, but there’s a fresh shirt on the bed. Plain army green, a size too big, but it’s better than the smelly I heart LV shirt.

Okay. I’m ready to go out there and make today my bitch.

Then I remember how many Mike Bravo badasses are in this house also getting ready to make today their bitch. All because of me.

The action, the commotion, everything stops when I enter the main living quarters. Some of the guys are eating breakfast at the table. Others are—I’m guessing—taking inventory of the mountain of weapons dumped on the couch. But the second I appear, everyone freezes and looks at me.

My heart stutters, and a lump forms in my throat.

I wish I could find my voice to thank them for what they’re going to do today, but my mouth can’t seem to work. So it opens and closes rapidly.

“This was a mistake.” I turn to run back to my room, but the second I do, I run into a large wall of muscle and a familiar scent—Zeus’s scent, which is somehow woodsy but also like sex.

“Geez. I leave you to take a piss, and you decide to face the lion’s den
